Start answer

Play the first hours like a route planner, not a room clearer

Mina the Hollower rewards patience, note-taking, and smart retreats. Your goal is not to kill every enemy on every screen. Your goal is to learn safe paths, keep enough Plasma Vials for the next unknown room, spend Bones before a risky push, and return later when a side path is clearly asking for a better tool.

  • Get the map as soon as Ossex opens
  • Use the newspaper and NPC hints
  • Spend Bones before blind detours
  • Keep useful Sidearm spawns in memory

Route card

Follow this order

Step 01

Choose the weapon you can control

The opening weapon choice matters because the next reliable weapon may be several hard rooms away. Nightstar gives safer reach, the maul rewards charged timing, and the daggers ask you to play close and precise.

If unsure, pick reach or safety before speed.

Step 02

Reach Ossex, then gather information

After the first major fight, do not sprint into the hardest-looking road. Talk to NPCs, read the newspaper, inspect the town fountain, and work toward the Hollower's Guild map.

Information is an early upgrade.

Step 03

Bank progress before greedy pushes

If you are carrying enough Bones to level up, shop, or fund a long-term unlock, handle that first. A clean retreat is better than losing confidence on a second death.

Spend, refill, then explore.

Step 04

Use modifiers if the friction is not fun

The game includes many modifiers. If Bone loss or boss pressure is stopping you from learning rooms, tuning the challenge is a valid way to keep moving.

The best setting is the one that keeps you playing.

01

Learn burrowing before rushing fights

Burrowing is both movement and defense. Use it to pass beneath hazards, cross awkward spaces, reset enemy spacing, and test suspicious terrain. Don't assume an obstacle requires a new item—most of the time, a simple burrow interaction is all you need.

  • Practice burrow exits near weak enemies before trying them in boss rooms.
  • When water, holes, or brittle ground look impossible, test whether burrowing changes the rule.
  • Do not exit a burrow directly into an enemy pattern unless you already know the timing.

02

Treat Plasma Vials as route planning

Plasma Vials are not just emergency heals. They decide how long you can stay away from a checkpoint. If a route keeps draining your vials before you reach new information, mark the path and return with more upgrades or a better Sidearm.

  • Break objects and fight safer enemies when you need refills.
  • Prioritize early vial capacity when long routes feel too tight.
  • Backtrack after an ugly room instead of forcing the next unknown screen at low health.

03

Spend Bones with a goal

Bones are currency and level-up pressure at the same time. Do not upgrade everything evenly just because the menu invites it. Decide what is blocking you, then spend toward that answer.

  • Attack helps your main weapon solve rooms faster.
  • Defense makes learning new areas less punishing.
  • Bonestones are useful when you are about to carry value into a dangerous route.
  • Sidearm upgrades matter more once you know which Sidearms you actually use.

04

Read the world like a manual

Mina is built like an old handheld adventure with modern density. The manual, newspaper, NPC lines, fountain lights, map hints, and repeated Sidearm spawns all carry practical route information.

  • Check the Tenebrous Times after major progress.
  • Remember fixed Sidearm spawn locations that solve gaps or awkward enemy groups.
  • Treat dead ends as future notes, not failed progress.

What to do when the game starts pushing back

ProblemBest responseWhy it works
You keep dying with lots of BonesSpend, convert, or return before the next blind pushThe risk drops and you can learn the route without panic.
A route feels too longAdd vial capacity, improve Defense, or find a closer shortcutLong routes are usually a healing economy problem.
Enemies feel unfairChange spacing, weapon reach, or Sidearm useMany fights are easier when you control the angle instead of trading hits.
You feel lost after townUse the map, newspaper, NPCs, and fountain directionsThe game gives broad direction rather than a room-by-room objective marker.

Early trinket

Primed Vial Pouch is a comfort pick

Extra Plasma Vial space makes long early routes and boss attempts less brittle. Use it while learning, then swap later when your base healing capacity improves.

Early upgrade

Sparks are more than a safety net

Sparks soften Bone loss pressure and can gate certain doors. If you are unsure what to prioritize, more active lives and more route access are rarely wasted.

Exploration

Do not clear every screen every time

On corpse runs or low-vial returns, skip enemies that do not block the path. You are preserving health for the room that actually killed you.

Comfort

Modifiers are part of the package

If the default Bone loss, boss strength, or survival pressure is blocking progress, use the built-in modifiers. You can always tighten the challenge later.

FAQ

Quick Answers

What should I upgrade first?

Early Attack and Defense are your safest upgrades. Add Spark and trinket-slot goals when the route starts asking for more survivability or locked-door access.

Should I farm Bones early?

Farm only when you are close to a useful upgrade. Repeating a safe loop forever is less helpful than spending what you have, learning a route, and returning with better information.

Is the game supposed to feel hard?

Yes. You will experience a noticeable difficulty jump right after the opening hours. Focus on better routing, safer spending, smarter burrowing, and using modifiers if the pressure stops being fun.
